Judge Samuel C. Ranck, 82, a lifelong resident of Milton, died at 7:45 a.m., on Sunday, July 18, 2010, at the Kramm Healthcare Center in Milton.
He was born on May 9, 1928, in Williamsport, son of the late Dale E. Ranck Sr. and Hilda (Krom) Ranck. On April 26, 1958, he was united in marriage to the former Sylvia Klock, who survives.
Judge Ranck graduated from Milton High School in 1946, and from Bucknell University in 1950. He received his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law in 1953.
Judge Ranck retired from the Northumberland County bench in 2008 after serving thirty-three years as a judge. Samuel Ranck began his legal career in the law practice of Michael Kivko in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, where he served his preceptorship. From 1955 until 1975, he had a private law practice in Milton. He served for many years as an Assistant District Attorney in Northumberland County, and became District Attorney in 1972. In 1976, he was elected to serve as a Judge of the 8th Judicial District of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Northumberland County, and in 1986 he became President Judge. Judge Ranck served on the bench until 2008 when he retired at age 80.
Judge Ranck was a member of the First Baptist Church of Milton for over 60 years, where he was active and held various positions within the church over the years. He was a former member of the Northumberland County and the Pennsylvania Bar Associations. He was very active in the community and served on many boards and civic organizations including the Milton Rotary Club, serving as a past-president, Director of the former Milton Bank & Savings, Director of the Milton Community Plan, Director of the Evangelical Hospital, Salvation Army Board, Milton, Milton YMCA board, and member and past master of Milton lodge F&AM # 256.
Sam was an avid golfer and loved to play golf with his wife, Sylvia, and family. He and his wife were members of the Wynding Brook Golf Club in Milton, and Susquehanna Valley Country Club in Hummels Wharf, and they spent time at their home near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
In addition to his wife of 52 years, he is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Ranck Person of Cogan Station; a son, Thomas F. Ranck of Milton, a grandson, Samuel J. Person of Cogan Station; a brother, Dale E. Ranck, Jr. of Milton, three nieces and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by a son, Samuel C. Ranck, III on November 23, 2003.
Relatives and friends may visit from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at Rooke Chapel, on the Bucknell University Campus, Lewisburg, where the funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m., with Rev. Aden Wertz, officiating.
Burial will be private for immediate family at the Milton Cemetery.
